CONSTRUCTION GROWTH HAMPERED BY PERFECT STORM OF ISSUES

The UK construction industry is experiencing a post-pandemic growth spurt, but it’s not all smooth sailing.

According to a report by Autodesk, construction firms are facing a “perfect storm” of talent shortages, inflation, the cost-of-living crisis, and Brexit. This means it’s crucial for construction companies to recruit and invest in both traditional and new digital skills to stay competitive.

But with 58% of UK construction professionals struggling to find people with the right skills and 36% unable to offer competitive salaries due to the cost of living, the industry is facing some major challenges.

The most difficult roles to fill include electricians, bricklayers, and plumbers. Additionally, 23% of construction firms are having trouble finding people with augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) skills, which are expected to be in high demand in the next five-to-10 years. Despite these challenges, 57% of companies are experiencing post-Covid growth, with an average expected growth of 27% in the next financial year.

To support this growth, 79% of construction businesses are recruiting, with 42% saying staff recruitment will be their biggest investment in the next two years. Autodesk director of construction strategy Matt Keen emphasized the need for construction companies to invest in both traditional skill sets and digital capabilities to deliver on the country’s goals around growth and sustainability. Improving equality, diversity, and inclusion can also help bring new kinds of talent to the industry, particularly as new technologies and methods of construction are adopted.

While the industry is facing challenges, 72% of construction firms believe they’re well-equipped to adapt to changes in the Building Safety Act. Are you ready to join the construction industry and help build a sustainable future?
